No. Reviewers access shared models through a browser link with no software installation required. They can view the full 3D geometry, rotate and section the model, and leave annotated comments. A 3DEXPERIENCE platform account (which can be a free viewer role) is all they need. Only the designer creating and editing the actual SOLIDWORKS model needs a CAD license.
The core Cloud Services collaboration capabilities are included with SOLIDWORKS Design licenses under an active subscription — at no additional cost. Single-user licenses include immediate cloud connectivity. Device licenses can activate cloud capabilities when ready. Advanced platform roles such as expanded ENOVIA data management or formal change management workflows may require additional licenses. Not necessarily. The collaboration tools complement SOLIDWORKS PDM rather than replacing it. PDM handles formal vault-based version control for engineering files; the platform's collaboration layer handles the review and communication workflow around those files. For teams without PDM, the platform's Store and Revise capabilities can serve as a lightweight alternative. We can help you evaluate what makes sense for your specific situation and existing infrastructure.
Real-time co-design where multiple engineers actively edit a shared model simultaneously is a capability of the cloud-native xDesign role on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. Within the standard SOLIDWORKS desktop environment with Cloud Services, the model uses check-in/check-out locking to prevent overwrites — similar to PDM — while still allowing multiple people to review and annotate the same model at the same time.
The 3DEXPERIENCE platform is hosted by Dassault Systèmes on enterprise-grade cloud infrastructure with role-based access control, encrypted data transfer, and full audit logging. You control who has access to what data. The platform is used by defense contractors, medical device manufacturers, and other industries with strict IP protection requirements.
